Article 15. Name of the citizen The Civil Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan

     1. A citizen acquires and exercises rights and duties under his own name, which includes the surname and first name, as well as, if desired, the patronymic.

     2. Legislation may provide for cases of anonymous acquisition of rights and duties by citizens or the use of a pseudonym (fictitious name).

     3. The name received by a citizen at birth, as well as a name change, are subject to registration in accordance with the procedure established by the legislation on registration of acts of civil status.

     4. A citizen has the right to change his name in accordance with the procedure established by legislative acts. A name change is not a reason for termination or modification of his rights and obligations acquired under his former name, anonymously or under a pseudonym.

     5. A citizen is obliged to take the necessary measures to notify his debtors and creditors of the change of his name and bears the risk of consequences caused by the lack of information from these persons about the change of his name.

     6. A citizen who has changed his name has the right to request that appropriate changes be made to the documents issued in his former name.

     7. The acquisition of rights and obligations under the name of another person is not allowed.

     8. A citizen has the right to demand that the use of his name be prohibited when it was done without his consent, except in cases provided for by the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

     9. The damage caused to a citizen as a result of the misuse of his name is subject to compensation in accordance with the provisions of this Code.

     In case of distortion or use of a citizen's name in ways or in a form affecting his honor, dignity and business reputation, the rules provided for in Article 143 of this Code shall apply.
