Article 257. Protection and reproduction of rare and endangered species of animals living in a state of natural freedom of the Ecological Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan

1. Actions that may lead to the death, reduction in numbers or disruption of the habitat of rare and endangered species of animals are not allowed.

2. Individuals and legal entities are required to ensure the protection of animals within the designated territories, and to inform the authorized state body in the field of protection, reproduction and use of wildlife about cases of death of animals classified as rare and endangered species that have become known to them or have been identified. The procedure for investigating such cases is determined by the authorized state body in the field of protection, reproduction and use of wildlife and (or) the authorized body in the field of fisheries and the authorized body in the field of fisheries within their competence.

3. Assistance is provided to rare and endangered species of animals in cases of mass diseases, threats of death in natural disasters and due to other causes in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of protection, reproduction and use of wildlife.

4. In order to prevent the death of animals classified as rare and endangered species, their removal is prohibited, except in exceptional cases by decision of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

5. In order to reproduce rare and endangered species of animals living in a state of natural freedom,:

1) improving the conditions of natural reproduction;

2) relocation;

3) release of artificially bred animals into the habitat.

6. The measures specified in paragraph 5 of this Article are carried out with the permission of the authorized state body in the field of protection, reproduction and use of wildlife or the authorized body in the field of fisheries on the basis of biological justification.

7. For the protection and reproduction of rare and endangered species of animals living in a state of natural freedom, specially protected natural territories are created, and protected zones can also be established around them with the prohibition of any activity within these zones that negatively affects the state of the animal world.

8. When designing and implementing activities, measures should be developed to preserve the habitat and breeding conditions, migration routes and places of concentration of rare and endangered species of animals, and the inviolability of designated areas of special value as a habitat for these animals should be ensured.
