Article 121. Involvement in the improvement of the institution and improvement of living conditions of the Penal Enforcement Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan
1. Convicted persons are assigned to unpaid work lasting no more than two hours per week in the order of priority during non-working hours.:
1) improvement of cells, rooms and common areas;
2) for the improvement of the territory of the institution and adjacent to it, with the exception of facilities of engineering and technical means of supervision, control and protection located on the main fence and outside the internal restricted area;
3) to improve cultural, household and sanitary-hygienic living conditions.
2. The refusal of convicted persons, with the exception of those who are in medical organizations located in institutions, to receive medical care in inpatient conditions, from performing the work specified in the first part of this Article, shall entail the application of penalties provided for by this Code.

Part Two as amended by the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 12/30/2021 No. 95-VII (effective: from July 1, 2022 – in respect of persons held in pre-trial detention facilities of the penal (penitentiary) system; from January 1, 2023 - in respect of persons held in institutions of the penal (penitentiary) systems).
3. Persons held in a disciplinary isolation unit, solitary confinement and temporary isolation rooms shall be engaged in unpaid work lasting no more than two hours per week to improve the sanitary and hygienic living conditions in cells and common areas and to improve the territory of the disciplinary isolation unit, solitary confinement and temporary isolation rooms.
